Inverse Ramsey Problem of the Resource Misallocation Effect on Aggregate Productivity

چکیده

This paper examines the extent to and the conditions under which resource misallocation negatively affects aggregate productivity in a model of heterogeneous firms to the highest degree. I analytically derive the minimum aggregate total factor productivity (TFP) under resource misallocation, when frictions are modeled as the taxes levied on a firm’s output, and the range of these taxes is provided. I find that the lower limit of the minimum aggregate TFP is the TFP under perfect substitute goods and constant returns to scale technology. Further, with the exception of particular parameter values in which the misallocation effect on aggregate TFP is small, the minimum aggregate TFP is achieved when the proportion of firms in the lowest tax level is small or when the TFP level of these firms is low.

A Simple Accounting Framework for the Effect of Resource Misallocation on Aggregate Productivity

This paper develops a simple accounting framework that measures the effect of resource misallocation on aggregate productivity. This framework is based on a multi-sector general equilibrium model with sector-specific frictions in the form of taxes on sectoral factor inputs. This framework is flexible for demand side assumptions such as preference and aggregate production function. Moreover, thi...

Misallocation and Productivity during the Great Depression

Aggregate productivity fell by 18% between 1929 and 1933. Existing explanations for this decline have focused on unobserved shifts in factor inputs such as labor hoarding. I develop a new hypothesis that focuses on the role of resource misallocation between heterogeneous firms. Using a novel plant-level dataset, I study two industries: manufactured ice and cement. I decompose the overall change...

Resource Misallocation and Aggregate Productivity under Progressive Taxation∗

This paper quantitatively examines the long-run macroeconomic effects of resource misallocation in an otherwise standard one-sector neoclassical growth model with heterogeneous establishments being subject to progressive taxation as well as endogenous entry decisions. Under a progressive fiscal policy rule, capital and labor inputs move from more productive to less productive establishments as ...

Misallocation and Manufacturing TFP in China and India

Resource misallocation can lower aggregate total factor productivity (TFP). We use micro data on manufacturing establishments to try to quantify the extent of this misallocation in China and India in recent years. Viewing the data through the prism of the Melitz model of monopolistically competitive firms, we estimate sizable gaps in marginal products of labor and capital across plants within n...

Quarterly Journal of Economics Misallocation and Manufacturing Tfp in China and India *

Resource misallocation can lower aggregate total factor productivity (TFP). We use microdata on manufacturing establishments to quantify the potential extent of misallocation in China and India versus the United States. We measure sizable gaps in marginal products of labor and capital across plants within narrowly defined industries in China and India compared with the United States. When capit...
